When I do my Timing chain, fan clutch and the corresponding gaskets in the next month or so, I figured I’d replace all my timing and ignition components. Considering the only timing and ignition components that have been replaced in the last 22 years is the NGK Iridiums and Bosch wire set I put in Earlier this year, I thought it would be a good idea. Also, my timing cover is leaking a quart of oil every 3k miles. But I noticed that the Accel Super Coil for my truck is only about $5 more expensive than the Borg Warner unit. So I think I might give it a shot. What does Oppo think of Accel Coil packs? Is it worth the extra $5? Do ya reckon it’ll up my power any?

I don’t have any experience with Accel products, but I’m finding more and more that you just can’t go wrong with Motorcraft.

I have found that if its made by ford, you can definetly go wrong. But joking aside, the motorcraft coil is about $100 more expensive than the accel, so Id like to try something cheaper

Heh, nothing lasts forever, that’s for sure.
Yikes! That’s quite a chunk o’ change! Did you try running the part number for a better deal?

Yeah, I ran it through the interchange at work. The cheapest one is our store brand (masterpro) for $40 and I tend to only trust our brand for wear parts.

Your call, of course. What year, what engine?

1993 Ford Ranger withe the 4.0 OHV V6. (Vin Code X)

Right on! Yeah, Motorcraft DGE446 coils can be found for much less than that Accel unit all day long. RockAuto’s got ‘em for under $40. If the original lasted 22 years, I think that’s pretty good.

Just out of curiosity are you planning on replacing the timing chain guides? I'd replace those before the chain itself, just a Ford mechanics 2 cents

I heard bad reviews about Accel coil on plugs for Ford Modular motors. No idea on coils. Motorcraft and MSD are both decent.

It won’t help your power because a coil only puts out enough volts to jump the spark plug gap. Unless you make it harder to jump the gap by upping the compression or adding nitrous or boost then a stock coil will put out the same volts as a performance coil.

I too, have sold Masterpro and owned a Ranger with the same power plant. Aside from essentially pissing oil out of the valve covers at 200k it ran about as good as it ever did. I could go on about that ol’ girl,…
The Accel coils for the Ford modular motors had bad reps for not lasting well. I never personally experienced them. Without personally researching it before hand- I’d probable go with FoMoCo or BWD,…
(I can has no more grey?)

I think most accel products are crap. That thing won’t last, and may leave you stranded one day. If you still decide to buy it, buy 2 so you can keep a spare in the glove box.

This.

Good call.
In fact, I wouldn’t even do one “before” the other, but just do it all while it was open. Full timing sets aren’t very expensive.

Yeah, Im doing a full timing kit

I have followed you for oppositelock, so u can haz no more grey. Its nice to see another Ranger Aficionado on here. What was yours specced at? Mine is a 1993 rwd extended cab in cayman green with the m50d 5 speed and a 3.55 LSD on an 8.8

Ditto. However, I’ve found that often aftermarket “performance” coils are often “rated” for 40-80k volts whereas OE ones are often 100k volts.

On stock engines that aren’t running distributors no gains will be had by installing aftermarket ignition components. If your stock ignition setup were weak then the engine would not run right, especially under load, and would probably kick out a CEL for incorrect mixture or misfires.
Accel products tend to be crap. I’ve run them myself (never lasted me more than two years), and have seen customers run then on Defenders and domestic trucks. One of mine failed memorably in the middle of December in Minnesota just after a blizzard when temperatures were hovering around 0. Thanks Accel. They almost always get replaced in under three years.
If you don’t have an issue with your factory coil, don’t bother replacing it. DIS/WS/COP ignition systems are considerably more robust and powerful than older systems. But if you still feel like replacing it, go with a trusted OE brand.

A solid NO . At least for plugs, wires, distributors, and coils. Accel’s quality is nowhere near what it used to be.

‘93 push button* 4x4 extended cab. Labis metallic blue. Cologne 4.0OHV +Mazda 5 speed. 3.73 track-lock 8.8 rear. Warn manual locking hub conversion. Sat on 31x10.50s w/stock rims (no lift, factory tire size was the 265/70r15). Manual windows + locks .
I loved that thing. Something uniquely satisfying about rowing that bus like shifter . Only complaint was terrible MPG. I had been daily driving a high-compression B18a1+vtec DA Integra before that and just wanted something really different.
*had to replace the dang electric motor on the transfer case, lol. Didn’t take long and wasn’t inexpensive, luckily.

Yeah there is something oddly satisfying about the shifter in my truck. Mine is only barely at 120k miles but when the 4.0 eventually croaks (which we all know it will) I plan a 302/T5 swap. Im also thinking about replacing my 3.55 traction lock rear end with a 3.73 traction lock gear set. Its been a bit sluggish since I upped my tire size from a 215/70/14 to a 225/70/15. Here’s a recent photo of mine:
